【”AWA NATURAL INDIGO” from Tokushima, Japan】
Crafted with exquisite Awa Natural Indigo, Japan’s indigo is made from a species of knotweed only found in Japan, providing a deep and beautiful blue color to our garments.
Awa Natural Indigo is carefully grown on the plains near the Yoshino River in Tokushima Prefecture where the soil is extremely rich and fertile.
The indigo from this region is labeled “Sho(Real)-Ai(Indigo)” and is prized throughout Japan as it is the best indigo in Japan. They call this treasured indigo as “Shoai” to distinguish from “Ji-Ai” which is Indigo from other regions of Japan.
“Shoai” does not give off the deep blue color right away, so the skilled craftsmen repeat the process of the Dye, Squeeze, and Dry many times. This gives the fabric a distinctive, beautiful deep blue.
These craftsmen who mastered the special technique to dye “Shoai” are labeled as “Living National Treasures” by Tokushima Prefecture.
Note: Natural dyes without any chemical materials may fade or discolor, however, please recognize this as one of the defining features of natural dyes.
